Westwood State Conservency Area is a good day ride

By: Ashley Allyn

Westwood State Conservancy Area is a good day ride. The trail surrounds a large lake. It takes around two hours to circle the lake at an easy pace. We usually go one way in the morning, eat lunch, and then go the opposite direction in the afternoon. There are places you can go into the lake so your horse can get a drink or cool off. Be careful, though!! My friend's horse was so glad to see the water that he felt complled to "stop, drop, and roll" before she could stop him! What a way to break in a new saddle!
Half way around the lake there is a outhouse and water. There is a camping area there, but it must be reserved ahead of time and they will only take reservations for a large group, not individuals.
It's a nice, relaxaing ride and a good place for beginners.
