Riding and Camping at Pigeon River

By: FT Funny Farm

Pigeon River is about a 45 minute drive East of Gaylord,Michigan. It has over 92,000 acres. There are over a dozen camp sites scattered along Tin Shanty Rd, Hardwood Lake Road and Chandler Dam Road. There is wild life galore with many Elk viewing areas. I've seen Elk just about every time I've gone riding. I've seen a ton of other wild life also.

Some points of interest in Pigeon River are the Witness Tree, Cornwell Floding, the Fire Tower, Inspiration Point and the Ranger Station all which are a nice ride from the camp, Elk Hill. There are miles and miles of both trails and dirt roads to ride on. It's fun to go shinning for deer, elk and other wild life at night.

There is also the camp site Elk Hill which is located on Twin Lakes Road. I believe there are around 15-20 campsites. There is also the over flow camp site which can be reserved for groups of 15 horses or more. It's a very nice area with many great sites. There is a water pump for your use but it takes a 5000 watt gen. to run it., you have to supply the gen.

I've been going to the area camping and riding for over 10 years now. I go at least once a year if not twice. It is my very favorite area to go. But it's about a 5 hour trip for me so I'm not able to go every weekend....like I'd like to!

There are good trail maps of the area which can be found at the Ranger Station. Camping is not all the much per night and with the over flow its around 75.00 than so much per horse with a min. of 15 horses. There are picket lines already there and most sites in not all of them are drive threw sites.

There are several towns within a hours drive of Pigeon River. There is Gaylord, Vanderbilt and Onaway just to name a few.
