Riding Yellowwood State Forest

By: HRA Crack Research Team

Yellowwood State Forest is located in the rolling hills of
Brown County Indiana. The forests's 23,200 scenic, sprawling
acres offer three pristine lakes, hiking and horse trails,
abundant wildlife, and overnight campsites easily accessible
to the public.

With its close proximity to Brown County State Park,
the quaint village of Nashville, T.C. Steele State Historic
Site, Monroe Reservoir, Morgan-Monroe State Forest,
McCormick's Creek Park and Indiana University,
visitors can enjoy a wide variety of acivities.

Yellowwood Lake is 7 miles west of Nashville, Indiana. A
horseman's camp is located at the south end of the lake
convenient to the many miles of horse trails that wander
through the forest.

Yellowwood Lake (133 acres), noted for its excellant
fishing, offers rowboat rentals as well as a boat ramp for
launching private boats (electric motors only). Both a year-
round Forest Office for information and registration and a
seasonal concession/boat rental are available. Bear Lake and
Crooked Creek Lake are also popular recreation and fishing
areas contained within the forest property. There is no
camping at these two lakes.

Horse Trails
S 1/2 mile long

Y is 8.6 miles, starts and ends near the horse campground.

Z (Bill Jack Horse Trail) is 4 miles and starts at the
campground traversing the west side of the lake and along
Scarce of Fat Trail.

X (Brock Road Horse Trail) is 2 miles long and starts on
Brock Road and connects to Bill Jack Trail.

W (Crooked Creek Trail) is 2.4 miles long

G is 7 miles and is currently closed due to the Iron Bridge
which is no longer safe to cross. Efforts are underway to
restore the bridge for light traffic.

All the trails have beautiful scenic overlooks in various
locations along with some valley riding. Riding along the
lake is beautiful.

The Horsemen's Camp is a Class C (no electric or showers)
with 10 sites located on the left side of the road before
you come to the Forest Office. You must register for camping
at the Forest Office. Reservations are not taken. The
campground has a hydrant and water tank for horses and the
bathrooms are primitive.

The hitchrails are designed for 6 horses. When you turn in
to the campground there is an open area with
several rails. To the right you will see a road going into
the wooded area, the campsites are designed to pull past
them and back into them at an angle. The sites are shaded
as well as the area for the horses. The circular road will
take all the way around the campground and back out to the
entrance of the campground.

There is also a telephone and small store with minimal
camping supplies such as ice, etc at the boat dock area
which is just a short distance from the horse camp.

Special Note
Crooked Creek Trail Head is Trail W of the Yellowwood State
Forest trail system. It connects to Trail D of Brown County
State Park.

To find Yellowwood from Nashville, IN. Go west on State Road
46 toward Bloomington. Watch for Ski World on the left,
maybe 5 or 6 miles out of Nashville. Crooked Creek Road is
the next road on the left past Ski World.

The trail head is on the left about a mile (or a little
more) off the highway. Watch for a gravel parking lot just
before the second bridge. There is a sign at the back that
says Crooked Creek Trail Head, but it is easily missed from
the road...
