Riding Prarie Creek

By: Author Unknown

Prairie Creek is where the Greenway Giddyup Ride is
held each year. It's a 2,300 acre park features a 1,252
acre stream-fed lake that is well stocked with a
variety of game fish. Prarie Creek is just south of
Muncie near the little town of Mount Pleasant off of
highway 35.

Recently, Prairie Creek Reservoir has started allowing
camping. It must be pre-approved and the trailers must
be fully contained due to the fact there are no
restrooms.

To camp call 765-747-4872.

If you park at the Cardinal Greenway parking lot on CR
500 S. they do have restrooms, hitching rail, picnic
table and mounting block at the north end of the lot.
There is no water at this lot either. Camping not
permitted. There is a connecting trail between Prairie
Creek Res. and Cardinal Greenway.

The Greenway has 3 miles of trails for horses.
The Greenway itself runs from Marion to Richmond.
Prarie Creek's Trails total 6 to 8 miles.
Some are sandwiched in between a country road and the
reservoir.

If you combijne Prarie Creek and The Cardinal, you will
have 11 miles or so. With 9 more currently under
construction.

Rider beware, the undergrowth in some places is very
thick, but the trails were very well maintained. I
would rate the trails easy to moderate, but there are a
couple of places where you have to ride along a paved
road.

Along the Greenway, there will be occasional bicylces
on the actual Greenway. The horse trails are off to one
side.

There is a special day riding permit that you must
purchase at the reservoir office near the boat ramp.

Unfortunately, it is on the opposite side of the
reservoir as to where the trails are.
The money is put toward maintaining the trails. At the
trailhead, there are no restrooms or water available.
All you have are hitch rails, a mounting block, and a
grassy area to park your rig.

You will also ride for a ways across an open field
before you get into the woods.

If you have first-hand experience with this trail riding
venue we encourage you to post your article here.
Tell us what's good and bad, any pointers, directions,
parking or camping information and be sure to say
which trails you like. Articles can be easily posted
using the "Submit Articles" link on the left of every
page. There is no limit.

Directions You can drive your rig to the rangers station and get a pass then motor to the the trail head on the other side, as you can't ride where the beach and picnic areas are. So you drive around the block, to get to horse-parking. Horse trails are on the opposite side of Ranger's station and people areas. Take 700E out of Selma to 300 S, turn left on 575 to rangers' station. You have to drive around to 475E.
