Riding Prairie Creek

By: Greg W.

My name is Greg Wilkins. I am one of the volunteers that help at the Prairie Creek/Cardinal Greenway horse trail. Currently I help organize and participate in the various aspects of trail maintenance on both of the trails. Both trails are maintained by hard working volunteers. Some of the trail materials are donated by local business, city/county govt. and some materials are purchased with money from the Cardinal Greenway( Giddy-Up) and others.

The trail system currently offers about 10 miles of riding opportunity. Trail heads are at Prairie Creek Lake and the Cardinal Greenway trail head at Medford. The Prairie Creek trail head is located on CountyRd. 475 E. This is the road that runs North and South along the West side of the lake. It offers ample parking for many trailers (large and small) hitching rails, mounting blocks and a picnic table.

Camping is allowed at this location for self-contained trailers at ten dollars per night. There is no water or toilet facilities at this trail head. The Medford trail head is located on County Road 350 South just off of State Road 35. It has a hitching rail, mounting block port-a-potti and a picnic table. Again ample parking for many trailers and no water. The trails offer varied riding along the the lake, through open meadows and through woods. The Greenway horse trail follows the asphalt Greenway trail with the horse trail being well away from the asphalt most of the time. The two trails are connected and can be ridden as a whole trail or individually.

In 2007 the new 7 mile addition to the Cardinal Greenway trail should open up for horse travel. This will give riders approx. 10 1/2 miles ( one- way) of trail from the Medford trail head, ending at the Blue Moon Resturant in Loasantville. That's 21 miles of continuous trail from Medford and approx. 24 miles of trail from Prairie Creek.

Trail system is maintained by volunteers and we are always looking for more. Some work needs to be done on the Greenway trail to get it up and running. We plan two work days( Spring, Fall) with a few others sometimes thrown in. If you would like to volunteer your time on these trails, or if you would like further info about them you may contact me directly or one of the other numbers listed below.
