Red Hat Riders rock the trails of northern Indiana!

By: Ashley Allyn

The Red Hat Riders had their first trail ride in May of 2006, but they've been burning up the trails of northern Indiana ever since. As members of the International Red Hat Society their ladies 50 and over wear red hats or helmets and purple shirts while their youngsters wear pink hats or helmets and lavender shirts.
Unlike some ladies groups, these ladies always welcome family and friends on their trail rides and it's not unusual to see husbands, boyfriends, and kids on their rides. In addition to their monthly trail rides they have training and fun clinics, participate in some small town parades and ride for charity.
In 2006 they were seen at the Monterey Ox Roast Festival Parade and the Potawatomi Parade in Attica as well on the trails of Tippecanoe State Park and Country Haven Horseman's Camp. In addition, they participated in the Chaps Therapeutic Riding Center Ride A Thon and the Lafayette area St Jude's Ride.
These Red Hat ladies take their horsemanship seriously. They're a mixed bunch of experieced riders and beginers and ride both English or western in both parades and on the trails. Their horses are a mixture of draft horses, gaited horses, warm bloods, paint and quarter horses, a retired polo pony along with the kid's ponies and other breeds.
They don't collect dues, don't do fund raising, and their parades are strictly just for fun, with individuality being more important than drill teams, matching clothes and tack, and fancy flags.
If you are looking for a group of ladies who dress flamboyantly and love to have fun, check them out. Their web site is www.redhatriders.net
