Explore the Shawnee National Forest

Located in southern Illinois, Shawnee National Forest lies between the mighty Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. It has some of the most beautiful scenery in the Midwest, such as unique rock formations, caves, spectacular bluffs and canyons. Shawnee National Forest offers hiking, backpacking,

Horseback riding is a tradition in this part of the state. Generations of equestrians have enjoyed the splendors of the forest on horseback. Horses are allowed anywhere within Shawnee National Forest except for developed recreation areas, designated hiker-only trails, and Natural
Areas.

The many miles of horse trails and roads in Shawnee National Forest provide access to several interesting and scenic locations. Trails are available for every type of experience level and physical condition, from easy to rugged. The River to River Trail should not be missed, and features that are worth riding to include One Horse Gap, Garden of the
Gods, Indian Kitchen, High Point, Devil's Back Bone, Crow's Nob, Salt Peter Cave, Sand Cave, Secret Canyon, Haynes Creek Canyon, Jackson Falls, as well as many others.

Whether you want to experience a blufftop panorama, delve deep into ancient woods, or take a lakeside stroll, a
trail will get you there.

Because Shawnee National Forest is such a wonderful and popular horseback riding destination, there are many places to stay with your horse when visiting the area. Where ever you choose to stay, reservations
