Directions to Brown County Horseman’s Campground

By: Uncle Oscar

Brown County State Park Horseman’s Campground in central Indiana is one of the most popular trail riding venues in the state.

Finding the campground is easy, once you know where to look.

First, be aware you can not get into the horse camp from the main entrance to the park. Do NOT go to the North Entrance.

You can find it on the map by looking for Columbus, Indiana on Interstate 65 South of Indianapolis. Find highway 46 and go west.

If you come from the east, your goal is to go to Nashville, Indiana, east of Bloomington.

Highway 46 runs between Nashville and Columbus.. so no matter which way you approach find Brown County Horseman’s campground, you must get on highway 46.

From I-65 at Columbus..
Take highway 46 west (toward Nashville). This pleasant road is an easy drive for 12.8 miles. You will even pass through the berg of Gnaw Bone known for its flea markets and is recognized as the "flea market capital of the world", as it has one flea market for every five residents.

Less than 2 miles after the last Gnaw Bone Flea Market, you will see the sign for Indiana 135. There is also a sign for "Horseman’s Campground".

Turn south on highway 135 (you can’t turn north), skip one paragraph and keep reading

From Nashville...
Take highway 46 to the east (toward Columbus) for about 3 miles, look for highway 135 on the right, going south.

From the east or west, the directions are the same once you are on Indiana 135. Beware: This is a very narrow, curvy and hilly two lane road with many blind curves and a few transmission-testing hills. Take your time and don’t crowd the blind curves.

After about 4 miles on this nightmare highway you will pass a school on the left and cross a wide concrete bridge. Highway 135 makes a 90 degree right turn just past the bridge. There’s a place to pull off and wipe your brow after the turn.

Ahead is another 3 miles or so of cliff-hugging, no-guardrail road.
Pass the Coyote Junction store and the entrance to Horseman’s campground is at the top of a hill, on the right.

Anyone who has ever navigated the dreaded 135 to Horseman’s campground has complained. But the reward is awesome. Great trails and easy camping.
See the other articles about the park and trails.

Good luck on your 135 adventure.
