Blackwell campground is located in the Charles C. Deam wilderness area. South of Bloomington. The camp is primative, with pit toilets, and hitch rails. You need to carry in your own water. Reservations are not available. Just show up. You do not pay to camp. You can always get in there when everywhere else is packed! It is very large and great for getting groups of trailers all together!! There is a large map board near the entrance of the camp area. Paper maps are available there, too. You can get permit tags for your horse at the little store just north of the camp on Rt 446. You can buy a daily tag or an annual tag. The tags are good for riding on National Forest Land in indiana. There are 31 miles of trails which are well maintained and true to the map. Take the Pennisula Trail up to Lake Monroe and eat your lunch from the grassy hill top over looking the lake. There are picknic tables available. Or ride to the fire tower. On a clear day, you can see Lake Monroe and Bloomington! The wilderness was once home to many farmsteads and six cemetaries. As you ride along, it is fun to watch for the old road beds and homesites only visible now by the crocuses that still bloom where gates and homes used to be.
